Nelson Mandela Statue vandalised during Trans Protest

Sculptures of Sir Robert Peel, Benjamin Disraeli and Millicent Fawcett also defaced by protesters during Parliament Square rally.

A Nelson Mandela statue was one of seven vandalised by trans rights activists protesting against the Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of a woman.

Sculptures of Sir Robert Peel, Benjamin Disraeli and the suffragist Millicent Fawcett were also defaced by protesters during the Parliament Square rally on Saturday, police said.

The Metropolitan Police said it had launched a criminal investigation into the incident, which also saw statues of the Earl of Derby, Viscount Palmerston and Jan Christian Smuts targeted.

The statue of Fawcett, a prominent campaigner for women’s rights in the 19th century, was daubed with graffiti reading “f– rights”.

Kemi Badenoch said Labour must “start defending women” as she reposted images of trans rights protesters holding up signs calling for JK Rowling to be killed on her X account.

The Tory leader said: “A mob of trans-activists waving death threats at women isn’t protest – it’s criminal incitement. If the law isn’t enforced, we don’t have equality, we have two-tier justice. It’s time for Labour to stop being on the side of these extremists and start defending women.”
