The fact that HHS encouraged religious leaders to begin production of COVID-19 vaccines in the spring of 2021 was a surprise. We brought this to light in our previous article discussing the COVID-19 Community Corps in late 2022. But what did surprise us as we dug deeper for this article was the extent to which faith leaders were being used to address the COVID-19 crisis. 19 vaccinations and the inappropriate – if not unconstitutional – way in which government officials persuaded these faith leaders to take charge.

With 86 founding members, the “faith leaders” category of the COVID-19 Community Corps was the talent. 3 These founding members include individual faith leaders as well as faith organizations from a variety of faiths—including the American Baptist Church, Catholic Charities USA, the Episcopal Church, the National Association of Evangelicals, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and the New York Jewish Agenda, to take just a few.
