Protest Organization Blacks Out Front Page of Major Israeli Newspapers After Crucial Vote

The symbolic move comes after the Israeli Knesset passed into law a bill weakening the court’s ability to block government decisions.

Some of Israel’s most widely read newspapers ran fully black front pages on Tuesday morning, after Knesset lawmakers passed a key judicial overhaul law. The law revokes the Supreme Court’s authority to overturn government decisions it deems unreasonable.

The page one ads—which ran in Israel Hayom, Yediot Aharonot, Calcalist, The Marker and Haaretz—were placed by the Democratech Israel, the hi-tech workers protest movement fighting against the Netanyahu government’s legislative push to weaken the power of the courts.

“Israel’s engine will never give up,” the ads stated on a second black page.
